The historic center of Sirolo
You are on vacation on the famous and laughing Riviera del Conero, and you are full of the sea after a beautiful morning spent in one of the many beaches in between Portonovo, sirolo e Numana. You want to discover the past, history and culture of this incredible area of the Marche. We therefore advise you to immerse yourself in the sober and fascinating atmosphere of the historical center of Sirolo! And we try to point you in particular what to visit in the Pearl of the Conero Riviera, this is how Sirolo is nicknamed.
As soon as you arrive in the center of this seaside town, you will notice the strategic position to dominate many enchanting views of the sea: both towards the north where you will come across the reassuring silhouette of Monte Conero, and towards the south where your gaze can range from Numana to Porto Recanati. It's a place where it is allowed to get excited, dream, and maybe meditate while sitting comfortably on a bench, and you are embraced by the shimmering colors of the Adriatic Sea. It is from piazza Vittorio Veneto, the central square of Sirolo, which in the evening becomes slightly more worldly, that ours begins small cultural tour.
From the square, keeping the sea behind you, go down to the left along Via Italia. After 70 meters you will come across the ancient one on your right Church of SS. Rosary. You will recognize this ancient place of worship in Sirolo initially by its stone walls, which for a moment will drag you into a bygone, medieval atmosphere. Accomplice of this leap back in time will be theGothic arch, which is right there in front, at the end of Via Italia. This ancient arch dates back to the year 1000! The Church of SS. Rosario is in Gothic style and was built between 1603 and 1613, then underwent a modest extension in 1898. Inside, in an urn of the main altar, you can find the remains of Pietro di Treia, who died in 1304 in the Convent Franciscan of Vetta Marina. But above all, if you are a lover of Art History you will be magnetized by the vision of a painting by Pompeo Moranti of the sixteenth century.
This painting depicts the Virgin in the center and on the sides San Nicola da Bari and Sant'Agostino. Leaving the small church you will notice a strange one on the external wall, the one overlooking Via Italia symbol scratched on the stone, which seems to portray an angel and an inscription that mentions San Michele.
Continuing our tour through the characteristic streets of Sirolo, from via Italia you can go down past the Gothic Arch, and arrive by turning right at the Cortellesi Theater. This 1800 theater is a source of pride for Sirolo's art and culture. Externally you will notice that its structure is part of the city wall system. Taking a short tour inside it can be seen that the show hall has the classic horseshoe shape and is embellished by a gallery of Doric columns, with two tiers of boxes, for a total of 220 seats.
It is in this hall that the winter theatrical season is staged, a very rich program that offers a variety of theatrical reviews, prose performances and musical concerts.
Always going up via Italia to the central square of the town there is another important thing to admire and visit: the Church of San Nicolò di Bari and the tower! The church is in neoclassical style, built in 1732. Inside you will discover a wooden crucifix from the 1500s, as well as an organ from the 1700s. Bell tower, it is an ancient defensive construction. Enemies from the sea were spotted from here! Today it has a great charm, as it looks like an architectural element that inspires protection to the town of Sirolo.
